The Great Read is a ‘shared reading’ campaign which aims to build a sense of community across the university, encouraging a shared interest amongst staff and students and acting as a conversation-starter during the first few weeks of term.
The Great Read began as a pilot in 2019, with 600 new students receiving a copy of The Time Machine by H. G. Wells. In addition, all staff and students were given access to an e-book via the library and were invited to attend a Halloween film screening of Jordan Peele’s “Us” to explore the related themes, and engage in a discussion of the book’s literary and scientific elements with Professor Rodi Herzberg and Dr Matthew Bradley. The Great Read will return for 2020 as part of our Liverpool Welcome and new Foundation Week (5th -9th October). All of our students and staff will receive a specially commissioned e-book containing an inspiring collection of four short stories, with accompanying essays from some of the University's leading academics. This year, it is more important than ever to ensure that our students feel they are part of the University community. Because we'll all be reading the same collection of stories, we hope that students and staff will be able to share their thoughts and experiences, whether virtually or face-to-face, with the four chosen stories acting as a catalyst for conversation #livgreatread
