Since its founding by Edgar Allison Peers in 1923, Bulletin of Hispanic Studies has become the foremost British academic journal devoted to the languages, literatures and civilizations of Spain, Portugal and Latin America. Recognised across the world as one of the front-ranking journals in the field of Hispanic research, it is supported by an editorial committee specialising in a vast range of Hispanic scholarship.

The journal’s interests are broad-ranging and cover the linguistic areas of Spanish, Portuguese, Galician, Catalan, Basque and Amerindian. While BHS mainly publishes articles in the areas of literature, linguistics, cultural history, film and visual arts, cultural and gender studies, this wide-ranging Spanish studies journal encourages reflection and engagement with all aspects of Hispanic Studies, both modern and traditional.

As of 2016, Bulletin of Hispanic Studies moved to 10 issues a year.

Call for Special Issue Proposals for 2022

The Bulletin of Hispanic Studies invites proposals for its 2022 Special Issue slot. Special Issues should focus on a particular theme, time period, approach or other area of interest that falls within the remit of the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, broadly defined as encompassing all aspects of literature, linguistics, culture, cultural history, film and visual arts.

Special Issues should be of approx. 50,000 words in total, and normally comprise between 6 and 8 articles, although alternative configurations are also acceptable, provided that they fit within the 50,000 word total.

The full contents of the Special Issue should be ready to be submitted to the BHS’s online submission system by 31 December 2020 at the latest.

How to submit a proposal

Proposals should be submitted by 30 August 2019 by email with the subject line ‘special issue proposal’ to: bhs@liv.ac.uk

Proposals should be submitted as a Word document containing the following information:

1. Title of the proposed special issue
2. Names, affiliations, and contact address (including email) of the proposed Guest Editors
3. A brief summary of the proposal (max 1,000 words), highlighting its focus, its rationale, its contribution to the field, and its theoretical or methodological approach.
4. A contents list, comprising the name and affiliation of each author, title of the article, approximate word count, and a short (200 word) abstract, which should indicate both the specifics of the article, and the contribution that it makes to the overall themes and focus of the special issue.

Review Process

The editors will assess all Special Issue proposals, seeking specialist peer review of the proposal where relevant. Decisions will be communicated by 1 January 2020.

Submission of the Selected Proposal

The Guest Editor(s) of the proposal selected for publication in the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies will be in charge of collating the constituent articles and liaising with their authors. The Guest Editor(s) should ensure that all articles are submitted to the Scholar One system by 31 December 2020. Full peer review will be undertaken during 2021, and the editors of the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies will liaise with the Guest Editor(s) throughout this process.
